Ghanaian Ceremonial Ritual Mask – Haunted Occult Artifact
This 20th-century Ghanaian ceremonial mask is a previously purposed ritual object with an established history of temple use, offered for serious practitioners and collectors – this is not decorative wall art. Kept and worked in my private temple for five years, it carries the density that comes from long-term placement, repeated handling, and lived ritual context. Its elongated carved face, horned structure, geometric surface work, shell-edged sides, and hanging natural fibers give it an unmistakably forceful presence that does not disappear into a room.
In its West African context, a mask of this kind serves as a working ritual implement, not a static ornament. It is worn in motion—brought to life through dance, drumming, and procession between shrine and community with regular offerings. In Ghanaian and neighboring traditions, ceremonial masks appear in celebratory rites, hunting/conflict, funerary rites, initiations, protective ceremonies, petitioning, and homage to the spirits, serving as temporary bodies for the hungry dead, ancestors, or embodied principles. The horned and elongated features, layered carving, and fiber fringe erase the ordinary human outline so that, for the duration of the rite, the wearer moves as the mask’s spirit-face rather than as a private individual.
Such masks are activated and deepened through repeated use. They accumulate offerings, spoken formulas, and layered intention over time, gaining presence through cycles of festival and ceremony rather than a single inaugural rite. When not in use, they are held under ritual custody—kept in shrine or controlled storage spaces and brought out under specific conditions, not left in casual domestic circulation.
In my care, this mask has been treated as a dedicated temple ceremonial object consistent with this mode of use. It has been kept in a private ritual space, integrated into workings and devotional structure, and allowed to build continuity of presence over a five-year period. It does not present as a neutral or “blank” object; it arrives with history already in it, both from its origin and from its subsequent life in temple practice.
This piece is best suited to a keeper who understands how to live with charged material and who intends to give it a dedicated, stable place in ritual or shrine space. It belongs in the hands of someone who recognizes that bringing a temple-worked mask into their space is a deliberate act with real consequences to atmosphere, dream-life, and the overall tenor of the space it occupies.
Ritual guidance included: With this mask, you will receive written instructions on how to properly welcome the spirit and the object into your home, as well as clear guidance on offerings and ongoing care. These preparations begin before the artifact arrives, so that the space and the keeper are ready to receive it as a working ceremonial presence.
Additional note: Until the time of purchase, this temple effigy remains charged and dedicated in its current temple function.
